Volkswagen are heading to November’s Baja 1000 with stripped back version of the Atlas Cross Sport. With the Baja 1000 concept in development with both Tanner Foust and Rhys Millen, the Atlas Cross Sport R looks set to roll with a reported detuned version of the VW WRC 2.0-liter race engine that’s capable of running at 600 horsepower.

Retaining the roofline of the production version Atlas Cross Sport, the finer details of the Atlas Cross Sport R are scant other than an unspecified transmission alongside 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Foust is lined up as one of the drivers for the 1000, with more to come.

VW also plans to invite designers from schools and colleges across the US to help design the car’s appearance at the start line of the Baja 1000.
